Questions & Answers about Kiireetön kokoontuminen sopii minulle tänään.
Why is 'me' in the allative case (minulle) here?
The verb sopia (to suit, to fit) dictates the case of the experiencer. When you want to say that something suits someone, the person must be in the allative case (-lle). This is a strict verb rection rule.
Could I use the verb käydä in this sentence instead?
Absolutely! In the context of suitability and scheduling, käydä is a very common synonym for sopia. You could say Kiireetön kokoontuminen käy minulle tänään, and it would mean exactly the same thing. It also requires the allative case (-lle).
The translation for kiireetön is 'relaxed', but how is this word constructed?
It is formed by attaching the privative suffix -tön (without) to the noun kiire (hurry, rush). So it literally means 'unhurried' or 'without a rush'. Note that the final e of kiire lengthens before the suffix, making it kiireetön.
Is kokoontuminen related to the word koko (whole/size)?
Yes, it belongs to the same word family. It is the noun form (using the -minen suffix) of the verb kokoontua, which means 'to gather' or 'to assemble' (literally coming together to form a whole).
