Questions & Answers about Normaalihinta oli kolminkertainen.
How exactly is kolminkertainen constructed from the number three (kolme)?
It is built using the instructive form of the number (kolmin) plus the suffix -kertainen (meaning "-fold" or "times"). Notice that it uses an -i- before the -n (just like kaksinkertainen or nelinkertainen), rather than the standard genitive form kolmen.
Why is kolminkertainen in the nominative case rather than the partitive here?
It is the subject complement describing normaalihinta. Since hinta (price) is treated as a singular, countable concept here, the adjective describing it stays in the nominative. If the subject were an uncountable mass noun (like "the amount of water"), the adjective would be in the partitive (kolminkertaista).
Why is normaalihinta written as one word instead of normaali hinta?
Writing them together creates a compound noun. In Finnish, combining an adjective and a noun into one word implies an established, specific concept. Normaalihinta refers specifically to the "standard price" or "regular retail price" as a fixed category, rather than just any price that happens to be normal.
Can I use -nkertainen words for fractions, like "a third of the normal price"?
