Questions & Answers about Tämä on sellainen sukukalleus, jollaista antiikkikauppias etsii.
Why do we use jollaista in this sentence instead of the standard relative pronoun jota?
We use it to pair directly with sellainen in the main clause. While jota just means "that" or "which", jollaista specifically means "the kind of which". Together, sellainen ... jollainen form a correlative pair meaning "the kind of ... that".
Why is jollaista in the partitive case rather than the nominative jollainen?
In the relative clause, jollaista acts as the object of the verb etsiä (to look for). Because etsiä is a partitive verb, its object must be in the partitive case, regardless of what case sellainen happens to be in the main clause.
Why does the subject antiikkikauppias come after jollaista?
In a Finnish relative clause, the relative word (in this case, jollaista) must always be the very first word of that clause. Even though it acts as the object of the verb, it is pulled to the front, and the subject (antiikkikauppias) and verb (etsii) follow it.
What are the root words inside the compound sukukalleus?
It is made up of suku (family, kin, or extended family) and kalleus (a valuable item or treasure). Put together, a "family treasure" is the natural Finnish equivalent of a family heirloom.
