Questions & Answers about Me tarvitsemme paremman hakusanan tätä hakukonetta varten.
Why is the object paremman hakusanan in the genitive case instead of the partitive?
The verb tarvita (to need) takes a total object when you need a whole, countable thing—in this case, one specific keyword. Because it is an affirmative sentence, the total object takes the genitive case. If the sentence were negative or if the object were uncountable, you would use the partitive.
What happens to the word parempi to make it paremman?
Parempi is the comparative form of hyvä (good). When adjectives ending in -mpi are inflected, the stem changes to -mpa- or -mpä-. Then, because the genitive ending -n closes the syllable, consonant gradation changes the strong mp into a weak mm. So, parempi becomes paremma- plus -n, resulting in paremman.
Why are the words tätä and hakukonetta in the partitive case here?
They are governed by the postposition varten, which means 'for' or 'for the purpose of'. In Finnish, varten always requires the word immediately before it (and any attached pronouns or adjectives like tätä) to be in the partitive case.
How does the word haku work in the compound words hakusanan and hakukonetta?
