Questions & Answers about Keskustelimme teoksen oudoista hahmoista ja juonesta.
Why are the words for characters and plot in the elative case (-sta)?
The verb keskustella (to discuss) always requires the topic of conversation to be in the elative case. This means any adjectives describing the topic, like oudoista, must also take the elative ending to match.
Does teoksen (the work's) describe both the characters and the plot here?
Yes. When nouns are linked by ja, a genitive modifier placed before the first noun naturally applies to both. We are discussing the work's characters and the work's plot.
If we wanted to describe the characters as 'ghost-like' using the -mainen suffix from this lesson, how would it fit into this sentence?
Why does juoni (plot) become juonesta rather than juonista?
The word juoni is an older Finnish noun ending in -i. In these words, the final -i changes to an -e- before adding singular case endings, so we get the singular elative juonesta. If you used juonista, it would be the plural elative (about the plots).
