Questions & Answers about Päätös tehtäneen vaikeimman neuvottelun jälkeen.
How do we form the passive potential verb tehtäneen from tehdä?
The passive potential uses the marker -taneen or -ttaneen. To form it, find the passive stem of the verb. For tehdä, the passive past participle is tehty, giving us the passive stem teht-. Add the potential passive ending -äneen (following vowel harmony), resulting in tehtäneen meaning 'will probably be made'.
Why is Päätös in the nominative case here rather than the genitive-accusative?
Päätös is the object of the action, but because the verb tehtäneen is in the passive voice, the total object takes the nominative case. If the sentence were active, like 'He will probably make the decision' (Hän tehnee päätöksen), the object would take the standard genitive-accusative ending -n.
How does the word vaikeimman relate to the base adjective vaikea (difficult)?
It is the genitive form of the superlative vaikein (the most difficult). It takes the genitive case to agree with the noun it modifies (neuvottelun), which is genitive because it is followed by the postposition jälkeen (after). When inflecting superlative adjectives, the nominative suffix -in changes to the stem -imma- before adding the genitive -n.
Could we express this probability without using the potential mood?
