Questions & Answers about Kana on uunissa.
How do we know this translates to "the chicken" and not "a chicken"?
Finnish doesn't have articles like English, so it uses word order to show definiteness. Because kana is at the beginning of the sentence, it is the known topic, meaning the chicken. If you wanted to introduce new information and say there is a chicken in the oven, you would flip this into an existential sentence and start with the location: Uunissa on kana.
Why is the subject kana in the nominative case instead of the partitive kanaa?
Using the nominative kana means we are talking about one whole, distinct bird, like an entire roast chicken. If you meant there is some chicken in the oven, referring to an uncountable mass of chopped meat or just a few pieces, you would use the partitive case: Uunissa on kanaa.
If I want to say I am putting the chicken in the oven, do I still use uunissa?
No, because Finnish strictly separates being statically located somewhere from moving into a destination. Uunissa is the inessive case, meaning the chicken is already resting inside. If you are actively moving it into the oven, you must use the illative case for movement: Laitan kanan uuniin.
