Questions & Answers about Ohjaaja neuvoo näyttelijää itkemään tässä kohtauksessa.
Why is the actor in the partitive case (näyttelijää) instead of the accusative?
Verbs of advising, requesting, or commanding, like neuvoa, take a partitive object when you are telling someone to do another action. You are directing your advice at them, so the person receiving the advice is in the partitive.
Why do we use itkemään instead of the basic dictionary form itkeä for 'to cry'?
This is the core rule for this sentence pattern. When you advise (neuvoa), ask (pyytää), or order (käskeä) someone to do something, the action they are supposed to do must be in the 3rd infinitive illative form. This is the form that ends in -maan or -mään.
How exactly is the form itkemään built from the basic verb?
You take the strong stem of the verb itkeä, which is itke-, add the 3rd infinitive marker -mä-, and finally the illative ending -än. Because of vowel harmony with the front vowels in the stem, we use -mään instead of -maan.
Why do both tässä and kohtauksessa have the inessive ending (-ssä / -ssa)?
