Questions & Answers about Kysykää oppaalta karttaa!

Why do we use oppaalta instead of oppaalle or opasta?
In Finnish, verbs of asking like kysyä require the person you are asking to be in the ablative case (-lta/-ltä). While English says you ask a person, Finnish literally asks information "from" them.
Why is the map (kartta) in the partitive case (karttaa)?
When using kysyä, the thing you are asking for acts as the object of the sentence and takes the partitive case. You are asking for a map, so kartta becomes karttaa.
Why is the verb kysykää and not just kysy?
Kysykää is the plural imperative (command) form. You use this when telling a group of people to do something. If you were telling just one person informally, you would use kysy! (or kysykää! if speaking formally to one person).
How do we get the stem oppaa- from the word opas?
The word opas (guide) belongs to a specific group of nouns ending in -as. When adding endings, the -s drops and the vowel doubles. At the same time, it goes through reverse consonant gradation, where the weak single -p- strengthens to a double -pp-, resulting in the stem oppaa- before we add the -lta ending.
