Questions & Answers about Olemme kiinnostuneita tästä tiimityöstä.
Why do we use the elative case (tästä tiimityöstä) when the English translation says interested in?
This is because of adjective rection! The adjective kiinnostunut (interested) always requires the thing you are interested in to be expressed in the elative case (-sta/-stä). You have to memorize this pairing rather than translating the English preposition "in" directly, which would incorrectly lead you to the inessive case (-ssa/-ssä).
Why is the adjective written as kiinnostuneita instead of the basic form kiinnostunut?
Because the subject is plural ("we", indicated by olemme), the adjective describing it must be in the partitive plural. The base form kiinnostunut changes its stem to kiinnostune- before taking the plural partitive ending -ita.
Why does the word for "this" change to tästä?
In Finnish, demonstrative pronouns like tämä (this) must agree in case with the noun they point to. Since kiinnostunut forces the noun into the elative case (tiimityöstä), the word "this" must also be in the elative case (tästä).
How do we know to use the -stä ending instead of -sta on tiimityöstä?
Tiimityö (teamwork) is a compound word made of tiimi + työ. In compound words, vowel harmony for endings is always dictated by the last word. Because työ contains a front vowel (ö), it takes the front-vowel elative ending -stä.
