Questions & Answers about Keskustelemme uudesta blogista.
Why is the elative case ending -sta used on both uudesta and blogista?
The verb keskustella (to discuss) is a cognitive verb that requires the topic of conversation to be in the elative case (-sta/-stä). While in English you "discuss a blog", in Finnish you essentially discuss "out of" or "about" it. Adjectives must always agree with their nouns in case, so both words take the matching -sta ending.
Why does the word for "new" (uusi) change to uudesta instead of just adding -sta?
The word uusi belongs to a specific group of older Finnish words ending in -si. When adding most case endings, the -si changes to the stem -de-. Therefore, the base becomes uude-, to which we add the elative ending -sta.
Could I use the partitive case here, like "Keskustelemme uutta blogia"?
No. Even though English uses a direct object for this verb ("discuss the blog"), Finnish strictly requires the elative case with keskustella. You cannot translate the grammar word-for-word; you must always use the -sta/-stä ending for the thing being discussed.
How is the verb keskustelemme formed from its dictionary form?
