Questions & Answers about Raportit on tallennettu.
Why is the verb on singular when the reports (raportit) are plural?
In Finnish, the passive voice does not have a true grammatical subject. Because of this, the auxiliary verb in the perfect passive is always the 3rd person singular on, even when the word receiving the action (raportit) is plural. You cannot use the plural ovat here.
How do we form the past passive participle tallennettu?
You start with the verb tallentaa (to save). A reliable trick is to find the present passive tallennetaan (is saved), drop the -aan ending, and add -u. This creates the past passive participle tallennettu which is used with on to form the perfect passive.
Why is the object raportit in the nominative plural form?
In passive sentences, a complete plural object is always put in the nominative plural (the basic form with a -t at the end). If the sentence meant that only some reports had been saved, you would use the partitive plural instead: raportteja on tallennettu.
Why does tallentaa change to tallennettu with a double N?
This is due to consonant gradation. The passive marker closes the syllable, causing the strong nt in the dictionary form tallentaa to change to the weak nn in the passive form tallennettu.
