Questions & Answers about Tulostin on korjattu.
Why does the perfect passive use the active word on in on korjattu?
In standard Finnish, the perfect passive is always formed with the active 3rd person singular auxiliary verb on, followed by the passive past participle, which is korjattu here. Only the main verb takes the passive form. The auxiliary verb remains active. (Note: using ollaan korjattu would mean "we have repaired" in spoken colloquial Finnish, not the standard passive).
How do we get the form korjattu from the verb korjata (to repair)?
The word korjata is a type 4 verb. To make the passive past participle for type 4 verbs, you take the basic dictionary form, drop the final -a or -ä, and add -ttu (or -tty for front-vowel words). Therefore, korjata becomes korjattu.
Why is the object tulostin in the nominative (basic) form rather than the partitive?
In passive sentences, a completely finished object (a total object) takes the nominative case. Because the perfect tense implies the repair is fully completed, we use the nominative tulostin. If the repairing were still ongoing, you would use the partitive case: Tulostinta korjataan.
What is the suffix -in at the end of tulostin?
The -in suffix is a very common way to turn a verb into a noun that represents a tool, instrument, or machine. Here, it is attached to the stem of tulostaa (to print) to create tulostin (a printer).
