Questions & Answers about Kukka on vaaleanpunainen.
The word for pink, vaaleanpunainen, is really long! How is it built?
It is a compound word made of two parts. Vaalean is a form of the word vaalea meaning 'light' or 'pale', and punainen means 'red'. So, Finnish literally calls pink 'light red'.
The English translation says 'The flower', but I don't see a word for 'the' here. Why?
Finnish does not have articles like 'a', 'an', or 'the'. The word kukka can mean 'a flower' or 'the flower' depending entirely on the context of the conversation.
If I wanted to say 'The flowers are pink' (plural), would vaaleanpunainen change?
Yes! In Finnish, adjectives have to match the noun they describe in number. If you change the noun to plural (kukat), you also need to change the adjective to plural (vaaleanpunaiset).
How do I pronounce the double vowels in vaaleanpunainen?
Whenever you see a double letter in Finnish, you pronounce it exactly like the single letter, but you hold the sound for twice as long. So the 'aa' in vaaleanpunainen is just a long, stretched out 'a' sound.
