Questions & Answers about Ostoskori on tyhjä, koska vertaileminen on hidasta.
How is the verbal noun vertaileminen formed here?
It comes from the verb vertailla (to compare). To create a -minen noun, you use the strong inflectional stem of the verb, which is the same stem used for the 'we' form (vertailemme). You simply take that stem and add -minen, giving you vertaileminen.
Can I use the basic verb form vertailla instead of vertaileminen?
Yes! In sentences structured like 'Doing X is Y', you can often use the basic first infinitive: vertailla on hidasta (to compare is slow). However, the -minen form is very common because it turns the action into a true noun (the act of comparing), which works perfectly as the subject of the sentence.
Why is hidasta (slow) in the partitive case, while tyhjä (empty) is not?
This is a key rule for describing things! Ostoskori (shopping basket) is a concrete, countable noun, so the adjective describing it stays in the basic nominative case (tyhjä). However, vertaileminen is an abstract concept or action. When you describe an action or abstract idea, the adjective must be in the partitive case (hidasta).
