Questions & Answers about Voitteko tuoda lisää esitteitä?
How is the partitive plural esitteitä formed from the basic word?
The base dictionary word is esite (brochure). For words ending in -e, the stem doubles that vowel to become esittee-. To form the partitive plural, you take this stem, drop the final e, and add the plural partitive ending -itä. This gives us esitteitä.
Why is esitteitä in the partitive case here?
It is triggered by the word lisää (more). In Finnish, words expressing an amount or quantity usually require the noun that follows them to be in the partitive case. Since we are asking for an unspecified amount of multiple brochures, we use the partitive plural.
Why is tuoda in its basic dictionary form?
The verb tuoda (to bring) follows voitteko, which comes from the verb voida (to be able to). Whenever you use voida, the second verb in the chain must stay in its basic infinitive form, very similar to how we say "can bring" rather than "can brings" in English.
Does voitteko mean the speaker is talking to one person or a group of people?
It could be either! The ending -tte corresponds to the plural "you" (te). However, Finnish also uses this plural form as a formal, polite way to address a single person, such as a receptionist or a customer. The -ko attached to the end is simply the question particle.
