Questions & Answers about Ohjaaja ei lämmitellyt tänään.
How is the word lämmitellyt formed from its dictionary form?
The dictionary form is lämmitellä (to warm up), which is a Type 3 verb. To make the active past participle, we take the consonant stem (lämmitel-) and add the participle ending -nyt. Because the stem ends in l, the n in the ending assimilates (changes to match the l), giving us -lyt.
Why do we use the past participle lämmitellyt here instead of a regular past tense verb?
Because the sentence is negative! In Finnish, to say someone didn't do something in the past, you use the conjugated negative verb (ei for he/she) followed by the active past participle of the main verb. You do not use the standard past tense marker -i- in a negative sentence.
What is the difference between lämmitellä and lämmittää?
Lämmittää (a Type 1 verb) means to warm something else up, like heating up food or a sauna. Lämmitellä (a Type 3 verb) is reflexive, meaning to warm oneself up. That is why it is used here for an instructor warming up their body before a workout.
How is the noun ohjaaja (instructor) formed?
It comes from the Type 4 verb ohjata (to direct, guide, or steer). By taking the strong stem ohjaa- and adding the suffix -ja, it turns into a noun meaning "a person who does this action" — in this case, a guide, director, or instructor.
