Questions & Answers about Me päivitämme verkon.
This lesson is about Verb Type 5 and the -itsi- past tense marker. Is päivitämme one of those?
Actually, no! Päivittää (to update) is a Type 1 verb, and this sentence is in the present tense (we are updating). If it were in the past tense, it would be päivitimme (we updated). It doesn't use the -itsi- marker because that is strictly for Type 5 verbs like tarvita (to need), which becomes tarvitsimme (we needed).
Why is there only one t in päivitämme if the dictionary form is päivittää?
This is a great reminder of consonant gradation. When we add the personal ending -mme, the syllable becomes closed. This causes the strong double tt from the infinitive päivittää to weaken to a single t in päivitämme.
Why does the word for network (verkko) end in -n here?
Because the action is aimed at a complete result—we are updating the entire network. In Finnish, this makes it a total object, which takes the genitive case ending -n. If we were only updating part of it, we would use the partitive form verkkoa.
Did verkko also undergo consonant gradation to become verkon?
Yes! Just like with the verb, adding the -n ending to verkko closes the final syllable. This forces the strong kk to weaken to a single k, resulting in the form verkon.
