Questions & Answers about Me tykkäämme luonnosta.
Why is nature written as luonnosta instead of just luonto?
This is because of the verb tykätä (to like). In Finnish, some verbs require the word connected to them to be in a specific case. This is called verb rection. Both tykätä and pitää require the thing you like to be in the elative case, which adds the ending -sta or -stä (usually translated as 'out of').
Where did the 't' go in luonnosta? The dictionary word is luonto.
This is an example of consonant gradation. When we add the ending -sta, it closes the final syllable. This forces the strong -nt- combination in the base word luonto to weaken into -nn-, making it luonnosta.
How does the verb tykätä turn into tykkäämme?
Tykätä is a Type 4 verb. To conjugate it, you drop the -tä ending, which triggers 'reverse' consonant gradation. The weak single -k- in the dictionary form becomes a strong double -kk- in the stem. Then you add an extra -ä- before attaching the 'we' ending -mme.
Can I drop the word me and just say Tykkäämme luonnosta?
