Questions & Answers about Löydätkö rahaa laukusta?
Why does the sentence use laukusta ("out of the bag") when the English translation says "in the bag"?
In Finnish, the verb löytää (to find) requires you to state where something is found from. Because you are conceptually discovering it and pulling it out of its location, you must use the elative case (-sta/-stä), which means "out of". In Finnish, you always find things "out of" places, never "in" them!
How do you build the word löydätkö?
It starts with the verb löytää (to find). To say "you find", the 't' weakens to 'd' (a pattern called consonant gradation) and gets the 'you' ending -t, making it löydät. Finally, adding the question particle -kö at the end turns the statement into the yes/no question "Do you find?".
The dictionary word for bag is laukku. Why does it only have one 'k' in laukusta?
This is another example of consonant gradation. When you add a closing ending like the elative -sta to laukku, the double 'kk' weakens to a single 'k'. So, the stem changes to lauku- before we attach the -sta.
Why is "money" written as rahaa with an extra 'a' at the end?
