Learn Finnish: Onko huoneessa kissa? - Is there a cat in the room?

In a normal statement, this "there is" sentence would start with the location: Huoneessa on kissa (There is a cat in the room). However, to ask a yes/no question, the verb on (is) moves to the very front and gets the question particle -ko attached to it, making it Onko.

Where is the word for "there" in this sentence?

Finnish doesn't use a placeholder word like "there" to say "there is" or "is there". The meaning is built right into the sentence structure. Just combining a location (huoneessa) and the verb on shows that something exists in that place.

Why does huone (room) have a double "e" in huoneessa?

Huone belongs to a special group of Finnish words that end in -e. When you add an ending to these words—like the "in" ending -ssa—the final -e doubles. So the base word becomes huonee-, and adding -ssa gives us huoneessa.
