Questions & Answers about Onko juna asemalla?
Why do we use asemalla instead of asemassa for "at the station"?
The suffix -lla (the adessive case) is used for external locations, open spaces, and points on a route, usually translating to "at" or "on". A train station is traditionally treated as an open area or a stop on a journey, so Finnish uses asemalla (at the station) rather than asemassa (inside the station).
What does the -ko in onko do?
The -ko suffix is a question particle. Adding it to the verb on (is) turns a statement into a yes/no question. Juna on means "the train is", while Onko juna? means "Is the train?".
Could I keep the normal word order and ask Juna onko asemalla?
No, Finnish has a strict rule for yes/no questions: the word that gets the -ko or -kö question particle must always be moved to the very front of the sentence.
Why does asema take the -lla ending instead of -llä?
This is due to vowel harmony. The word asema contains the back vowel a. Because it has a back vowel, any endings attached to it must also use back vowels (like a, o, or u). That is why it becomes asemalla and not asemällä.
