Questions & Answers about Tuo on auto.
How do I choose between tuo, tämä, and se when pointing out a car?
It is all about distance! Use tämä (this) if the car is right next to you. Use tuo (that) if it is further away but you can still see and point at it. Use se (it) if you are just talking about a car that is out of sight.
Why is there no word for "a" before auto?
Finnish does not have articles like "a", "an", or "the". The single word auto simply means "a car" or "the car" depending on the context.
Where does the word on come from?
Can I say Auto on tuo instead?
While Finnish word order is very flexible, switching it to Auto on tuo changes the emphasis heavily. It sounds like you are saying "The car is THAT one." For simple identification, the natural order is pronoun + verb + noun.
