Osoittautua + Translative Case
In Finnish, the verb osoittautua requires the adjective or noun that follows it to take the translative case, marked by the ending -ksi.
The translative case describes an outcome or a change in state, making it a perfect grammatical match for "turning out to be".

Adjective and Noun Agreement
When something turns out to be a specific noun, that noun takes the -ksi ending. If the noun is also modified by an adjective, both the adjective and the noun must agree by taking the translative ending.
Notice how both pelkkä (mere) and harhautus (distraction) take the -ksi suffix in the following sentence:
