### The Inessive Case ("In")

In English, we use prepositions like "in" or "inside" to say where something is. In Finnish, you express this by adding an ending directly to the end of the noun. This is called the **inessive case**.

The ending is either **-ssa** or **-ssä**, depending on **vowel harmony**:

- Use **-ssa** if the word contains the back vowels **a, o,** or **u**. Neutral vowels (**e, i**) don't change this rule (e.g., *hotelli* becomes *hotellissa* because of the "o").
- Use **-ssä** if the word contains the front vowels **ä, ö,** or **y**, or if it *only* contains neutral vowels (**e, i**).

### Vehicles: "In" Instead of "On"

In English, we often say we are "on" a bus, train, or ship. In Finnish, because you are physically inside the vehicle, you use the inessive case.

### Everyday Locations

The inessive case is used to locate people and objects in everyday places. Notice how words like *kahvila* (cafe), *sauna* (sauna), and *tasku* (pocket) all contain back vowels, so they take the **-ssa** ending.
