In land surveying and cartography, precision is everything. Whether establishing plot boundaries or placing markers, you need to state exactly how far away something is. Finnish expresses spatial distance using a measurement phrase in the genitive case followed by a postposition.
Static Locations with "päässä"
To describe a static location (being "at a distance of" something), use the postposition päässä.
- Put both the number and the unit of your measurement into the genitive case (ending in -n). For example, kymmenen metriä (ten meters) becomes kymmenen metrin.
- Follow it with the postposition päässä.
- If you want to specify the reference point—what the object is measured from—put that reference word in the elative case (-sta/-stä).
| The land surveyor stands ten meters away from the plot's boundary. | Maanmittari seisoo kymmenen metrin päässä tontin rajasta. |
| His boundary marker is a hundred meters away from here. | Hänen rajapyykkinsä on sadan metrin päässä täältä. |

Action from a Distance with "päästä"
When an action originates from a certain distance away, or when you are observing something from afar, Finnish uses the postposition päästä ("from a distance of") instead of the static päässä.
The grammatical structure is exactly the same: a genitive measurement phrase followed by the postposition.

This form is essential for describing cartography or fieldwork where you are analyzing or acting upon the terrain from a specific vantage point.
