Spatial adverbs (täällä, tänne, täältä)

Spatial Adverbs: The Three-Way Directional Logic

Like Finnish noun cases, spatial adverbs follow a strict directional logic. To say "here," you must choose the form that matches the movement of the action: toward the location, away from the location, or remaining static.

Tänne (Movement Towards)

Use tänne when an action is directed toward your location (like throwing or aiming at your position).

Throw the snowball here!
Heitä lumipallo tänne!
Build a new fortress here!
Rakentakaa uusi linnoitus tänne!

Täältä (Movement Away)

Use täältä when an action originates from your location and moves outward (like retreating or launching an attack).

A big snowball is flying from here!
Täältä lentää iso lumipallo!
I would rather aim from here.
Minä tähtäisin mieluummin täältä.
We must retreat from here immediately!
Meidän täytyy perääntyä täältä heti!

Täällä (Static Location)

Use täällä when an action happens entirely within your current location with no movement across its boundaries (like staying, hiding, or ambushing).

If the enemy attacks, we will stay here.
Jos vihollinen hyökkää, me pysymme täällä.
Here is our new fortress.
Täällä on meidän uusi linnoitus.
We can ambush the enemy here.
Me voimme väijyä vihollista täällä.

Directional Logic in Action

The verb determines the spatial adverb. Notice how movement toward a location versus movement away from a location changes the adverb used.

Come here quickly, because this is a good hiding place.
Tule nopeasti tänne, koska tämä on hyvä piilo.
We must escape from here, because the enemy sees this hiding place.
Meidän täytyy paeta täältä, koska vihollinen näkee tämän piilon.
I would crawl from here to the tree.
Minä ryömisin täältä puun luokse.
