### "His Own" vs. "Someone Else's"

In English, a sentence like "He left his lawnmower in the rain" is ambiguous—is it his own lawnmower, or his neighbor's? Finnish eliminates this confusion with a strict grammatical rule. 

When a third-person subject (*hän* or *he*) interacts with their **own** belongings, you must omit the genitive pronoun *hänen* (his/her) or *heidän* (their). Instead, you show ownership using **only** the third-person possessive suffix (*-nsa/-nsä* or *-Vn*) attached to the end of the noun.

If you were to say *Hän jätti hänen ruohonleikkurinsa...*, it would strictly mean he left *someone else's* lawnmower in the rain! By dropping *hänen* and relying solely on the possessive suffix, you signal reflexive ownership—meaning the subject and the owner are the exact same person.

### Applying the Rule Across Cases

As you navigate neighborly disputes and boundary issues, you will need to talk about people's yards, families, and problems. The rule of dropping *hänen/heidän* applies regardless of the grammatical case of the noun. 

First, decline the noun into the appropriate case, and then attach the possessive suffix to the very end.

Notice how the suffix adapts depending on the word's ending. It often takes the form of **-nsa/-nsä**, but after case endings that end in a short vowel, it frequently appears as a lengthened vowel plus **-n** (written as *-Vn*).
