Quantity adverbs (vähintään, korkeintaan)

Setting Maximums

When tracking your daily ravinto (nutrition), you might want to set an upper limit on a specific kalori (calorie) count or nutrient.

Use the adverb korkeintaan (at most / a maximum of) to establish this ceiling. It typically sits right before the number or quantity it modifies.

Choose a lunch that has at most five hundred calories.
Valitse lounas, jossa on korkeintaan viisisataa kaloria.
The need for carbohydrates is at most a hundred grams a day.
Hiilihydraattien tarve on korkeintaan sata grammaa päivässä.

Setting Minimums

On the other hand, your body has a certain tarve (need) for nutrients like rasva (fat) and kuitu (fiber). To express a strict minimum amount, use vähintään (at least).

A man of your size needs at least ten grams of fat.
Sinun kokoinen mies tarvitsee vähintään kymmenen grammaa rasvaa.
A human needs at least thirty grams of fiber a day.
Ihminen tarvitsee kuitua vähintään kolmekymmentä grammaa päivässä.

Emphasizing "At Least" with Ainakin

The adverb ainakin also translates to "at least". When you are talking about specific numerical goals, such as grams of proteiini (protein), it functions much like vähintään.

At least a hundred grams of protein a day is recommended for students.
Opiskelijoille suositellaan ainakin sata grammaa proteiinia päivässä.

However, ainakin is also used more broadly to mean "at least some" or "at any rate". This makes it perfect for general statements where you are focusing on the presence of a benefit rather than an exact measurement.

Healthy nutrition always contains at least a little fiber.
Terveellinen ravinto sisältää aina ainakin vähän kuitua.
This food does not contain any protein, but at least it gives energy.
Tämä ruoka ei sisällä yhtään proteiinia, mutta ainakin se antaa energiaa.
