Postpositions with pronouns (minun kanssani)

Postpositions with Personal Pronouns

When using a postposition (like takana, edessä, or kanssa) with a personal pronoun, Finnish requires a "sandwich" structure:

  • The personal pronoun in the genitive case (minun, sinun, etc.)
  • The postposition itself
  • A possessive suffix attached to the end of the postposition, matching the pronoun

The Possessive Suffixes

Each person has a corresponding suffix that attaches directly to the postposition.

PronounGenitiveSuffixExample (takana = behind)
minäminun-niminun takanani
sinäsinun-sisinun takanasi
hänhänen-Vn / -nsAhänen takanaan
memeidän-mmemeidän takanamme
teteidän-nneteidän takananne
heheidän-Vn / -nsAheidän takanaan

Notice that the third-person suffix usually doubles the final vowel of the postposition and adds an -n (e.g., edessä becomes edessään, kanssa becomes kanssaan). The singular and plural forms for the third person are identical.

The photographer stands in front of me.
Valokuvaaja seisoo minun edessäni.
Does the photographer see me if I stand behind you?
Näkeekö valokuvaaja minut, jos minä seison sinun takanasi?
Do you sit next to me in the group photo?
Istutko sinä minun vieressäni ryhmäkuvassa?

Third Person and Plurals

The pattern remains exactly the same when arranging other people in a photo, whether you are talking about "us," "them," or "him/her."

Who stands next to him in the first row?
Kuka seisoo hänen vieressään ensimmäisessä rivissä?
The background behind us is really dark.
Tausta meidän takanamme on tosi pimeä.

Directing the Group Photo

Taking a group portrait requires giving directions. You might ask people to pose (poseerata) or lean (nojata) to fit into the frame.

You pose with me, and a smile is important.
Sinä poseeraat minun kanssani, ja hymy on tärkeä.
You can lean on the table in front of me.
Sinä voit nojata pöytään minun edessäni.
Can you lean on my shoulder in the group photo?
Voitko sinä nojata minun olkapäähäni ryhmäkuvassa?
