Noun suffix ordering

The Strict Order of Suffixes

Finnish is an agglutinative language, meaning it builds complex meaning by stacking endings onto a root word. When a noun takes multiple endings, they must follow a strict, unbreakable sequence:

Stem + Plural marker + Case + Possessive suffix + Enclitic particle

Let's break down this sequence using the word kenno (honeycomb) to build the word kennoistannekin (even from your honeycombs):

  • Stem: kenno-
  • Plural: -i- (kennoi-)
  • Case: -sta- (elative "from": kennoista-)
  • Possessive: -nne- (your: kennoistanne-)
  • Enclitic: -kin (even: kennoistannekin)

Before looking at full sentences, note the two enclitic particles used here:

  • -kin means "also" or "even" and is used in positive sentences.
  • -kaan / -kään means "not either" or "not even" and is used in negative sentences.

Positive Sentences (-kin)

When making positive statements or questions, end the sequence with -kin. The structural order remains exactly the same regardless of which noun or case is used.

Are there new queens even in your apiaries?
Onko mehiläistarhoissannekin uusia kuningattaria?
Do you collect honey even from your honeycombs?
Keräättekö hunajaa kennoistannekin?

Negative Sentences (-kaan / -kään)

If the sentence is negative (using verbs like ei, emme, or eivät), the enclitic changes to -kaan or -kään (depending on vowel harmony). The suffix sequence order does not change.

The bees do not sting even our beekeepers.
Mehiläiset eivät pistä mehiläishoitajiammekaan.
Smoke does not come out even from our smokers!
Savua ei tule savuttimistammekaan!

Adapting to Other Cases

This formula works identically across all grammatical cases. If you need the adessive case (-lla / -llä) to say "on", or the inessive case (-ssa / -ssä) to say "in", the case ending simply slides into its designated slot before the possessive suffix and clitic.

Is there honey even on your protective suits?
Onko suojapuvuillannekin hunajaa?
The bees are buzzing now in my apiaries too.
Mehiläiset pörräävät nyt mehiläistarhoissanikin.
