### The nominal necessity construction

To express that someone *must* do something or that it *is time* to do something, Finnish uses a unique sentence structure:

- The person acting (the subject) is put in the **genitive** case (e.g., *minun*, *meidän*, *isän*).
- This is followed by a fixed necessity phrase like **on pakko** (must / have to) or **on aika** (it is time to).
- The action verb is in the **1st infinitive** (the basic dictionary form).

There is a critical rule for these sentences regarding the object. Normally, a total object takes the genitive-accusative ending **-n**. However, necessity structures trigger **total object case drop**. The object drops the **-n** and appears in its basic **nominative** form instead.

### Dealing with tight deadlines

These constructions are highly common when talking about urgent tasks, such as arranging a last-minute move or managing a lack of time (*aikapula*). Notice how the subject remains in the genitive and the object stays in the nominative, even when the sentences become more complex or use two verbs in a row.
