To express that you are doing one thing instead of another, use the compound conjunction sen sijaan että.

While English typically follows "instead of" with an "-ing" verb (like "instead of taking"), Finnish requires a complete clause with a subject and a conjugated verb. Because the action in this clause is a hypothetical alternative that is not actually taking place, the verb following että is typically conjugated in the conditional mood (identifiable by the -isi- marker).
