Surveys and Respondents
When discussing data collection, you will often use words like kysely (survey) and vastaaja (respondent).
| A new survey is sent to the respondents today. | Uusi kysely lähetetään vastaajille tänään. |
Forming Fractions with -osa
To form a fraction, attach osa (part) to an ordinal number.
- kolmas (third) + osa = kolmasosa (a third)
- neljäs (fourth) + osa = neljäsosa (a quarter)
- viides (fifth) + osa = viidesosa (a fifth)
To specify a fraction of a group, put the group in the elative case (-sta/-stä).
| A third of the respondents are women. | Kolmasosa vastaajista on naisia. |
| The statistics show that a quarter of the students are working. | Tilasto näyttää, että neljäsosa opiskelijoista on työssä. |
The Exception: Half
For "half", use puoli instead of -osa. When referring to half of a countable group, use the plural puolet followed by the elative case.
| Half of the respondents are on holiday. | Puolet vastaajista on lomalla. |
Discussing Data and Proportions
To describe survey results, you will use terms like tilasto (statistic), enemmistö (majority), vähemmistö (minority), and osuus (share or proportion).
| According to the statistics, the majority's share is growing. | Tilaston mukaan enemmistön osuus kasvaa. |
| The minority, whose share is small, is still important. | Vähemmistö, jonka osuus on pieni, on yhä tärkeä. |
To equate a fraction to a percentage, use prosentti (percent).
| One fifth is twenty percent. | Viidesosa on kaksikymmentä prosenttia. |
