Making Comparisons with "verrattuna"
To express "compared to" in Finnish, use the postposition verrattuna. Just like we saw with nähden, verrattuna requires the word it modifies to be in the illative case (the "into" case).
In the singular, the illative case typically adds a lengthened vowel plus -n (like -Vn), -hVn, or -seen. Any describing adjectives must also match this case:
- aiempi myynti (earlier sales) → aiempaan myyntiin
- viimevuotinen kysyntä (last year's demand) → viimevuotiseen kysyntään
- tarjonta (supply) → tarjontaan
| Compared to the earlier sales, this revenue is the best. | Aiempaan myyntiin verrattuna tämä liikevaihto on paras. |
| Compared to last year's demand, the markets are now better. | Viimevuotiseen kysyntään verrattuna markkinat ovat nyt paremmat. |
| Compared to the supply, the production is really competitive. | Tarjontaan verrattuna tuotanto on todella kilpailukykyinen. |
Plurals and Word Order
When comparing to multiple things, use the plural illative case, which usually ends in -iin or -ihin:
- kilpailijat (competitors) → kilpailijoihin
- markkinat (markets) → markkinoihin
- vuodet (years) → vuosiin
The comparison phrase with verrattuna is flexible. You can place it at the beginning of the sentence to set the context, or at the end.
| Compared to the competitors, we have to sell more. | Kilpailijoihin verrattuna meidän pitää myydä enemmän. |
| The demand was bad compared to the earlier years. | Kysyntä oli huono aiempiin vuosiin verrattuna. |
| Compared to the markets, the supply of these products is too small. | Markkinoihin verrattuna näiden tuotteiden tarjonta on liian pieni. |
