Questions & Answers about فردا عصر به چایخانهی سنتی میرویم.
How does the suffix خانه work in the word چایخانه?
The suffix خانه (literally "house" or "room") is a highly productive derivational suffix in Farsi used to create nouns of location. Here, it combines with چای (tea) to make چایخانه (teahouse). You will see it in many other words like کتابخانه (library, from "book") or داروخانه (pharmacy, from "medicine").
Is سنتی (traditional) also an example of derivational morphology?
Yes! It is formed by taking the noun سنت (tradition) and adding the suffix ی. This specific ی is called the "relative suffix" (ya-ye nesbat). It is the most common way to turn a noun into an adjective in Farsi, simply meaning "related to" or "having the quality of" the base noun.
Why is there an extra ی attached to the end of چایخانه in this sentence?
The noun چایخانه ends in the "silent he" (ه), which produces an "e" sound. When we link it to the adjective سنتی using the Ezafe connector, we cannot just add an "e" sound after another "e" sound. We bridge them with a "y" sound. In modern writing, this is shown by adding the letter ی at the end, making it چایخانهی سنتی.
The event happens "tomorrow evening" (فردا عصر), so why does it use the present tense میرویم instead of the future tense?
Just like in English ("We are going to the teahouse tomorrow"), Farsi frequently uses the present indicative tense (the می prefix form) for future events that are planned or certain to happen soon. The strict future tense using خواستن is quite formal and is rarely used in everyday conversation for planned, near-future events.
