Questions & Answers about دمپایی من کجاست؟ یادم رفت!
How does یادم رفت literally translate to "I forgot"?
Literally, it translates to "my memory went." This is a classic experiencer verb in Farsi. Instead of using an active verb with "I" as the subject, Farsi uses a noun (یاد, meaning "memory"), attaches a pronoun suffix to show whose memory it is (ـَم for "my"), and uses a 3rd-person singular verb (رفت, meaning "went").
If the verb رفت just means "it went", how would I say "you forgot" or "she forgot"?
The verb رفت (it went) always stays in the 3rd-person singular! To change who forgot, you only change the pronoun suffix attached to یاد. For example, "you forgot" is یادت رفت (your memory went) and "she forgot" is یادش رفت (her memory went).
I previously learned that "to forget" is فراموش کردن. What is the difference between فراموش کردم and یادم رفت?
فراموش کردم is a regular compound verb where you are the active subject ("I forgot"). یادم رفت is an experiencer verb ("my memory went"). They mean the exact same thing, but یادم رفت is much more common and natural in everyday spoken Farsi.
Why is the verb کجاست (where is) singular if the English translation says "slippers" (plural)?
In Farsi, items of clothing that come in pairs (like shoes, slippers, pants, or glasses) are usually treated as singular nouns. You literally ask "Where is my slipper?" (دمپایی من کجاست؟). You would only make it plural (دمپاییها) if you were talking about multiple pairs of slippers.
