Questions & Answers about دهمین دانشجوی کلاس غایب است.
Why does dahomin come before the noun, and why is there no Ezafe connecting them?
Numbers ending in -omin (like dahomin for tenth) always come directly before the noun they describe. When a number is placed before a noun like this, Farsi does not use the Ezafe connector. That is why it is simply dahomin dāneshjū and not connected with an e-sound.
Could I use the other type of ordinal number (-om) to say the tenth student here?
Yes! If you use the -om suffix, the number behaves like a normal adjective and must go after the noun with an Ezafe. You would say dāneshjū-ye dahom instead of dahomin dāneshjū. Both mean the tenth student and are perfectly natural to use.
Why is there an extra ی (ye) attached to the end of dāneshjū (student)?
That is the Ezafe linking student to class to mean student of the class. Because dāneshjū ends in a long vowel sound, we cannot just add the normal short e-sound. We have to use a ye-sound to connect the words smoothly (dāneshjū-ye kelās), and we write it with the letter ی.
How is the word غایب (absent) pronounced?
It is pronounced ghāyeb. The first letter is غ (gheyn), which is a guttural sound made in the back of the throat, similar to a French r.
