Questions & Answers about دانشگاه کجا است؟
Why does the word for "where" (kojâ) come after "university" (dâneshgâh)?
In English, we put question words at the very beginning of the sentence. Farsi doesn't do this. Instead, question words like kojâ stay in the exact same spot where the answer will go. Since you would answer "The university is [here]", the question is ordered as "The university [where] is?".
Will I hear native speakers say this exact sentence in real life?
In formal writing, yes, but in everyday spoken Farsi, people usually combine kojâ and ast. Because kojâ ends in a vowel, it merges with ast (is) to form kojâst. So, you will almost always hear native speakers ask dâneshgâh kojâst? instead.
How is the word dâneshgâh (university) built?
It is made of two parts: dânesh means "knowledge", and the suffix -gâh means "place". So dâneshgâh literally translates to "place of knowledge"!
