Questions & Answers about من در شرکت به موسیقی گوش نمیدهم.
How is the negative verb نمیدهم formed here?
The verb for "to give" is دادن and its present stem is ده. To make it negative in the present tense, we add the negative prefix نـ to the continuous prefix می, making نمی. Then we add the stem ده and the personal ending for "I", which is ـم. Altogether, it becomes نمیدهم.
If نمیدهم means "I do not give", why does the sentence translate to "I do not listen"?
In Farsi, "to listen" is a compound verb made of two words: گوش دادن. The word گوش means "ear" and دادن means "to give", so you are literally saying "I do not give ear". When making a compound verb negative, the negative prefixes only attach to the verb portion, which is why گوش stays exactly the same and separate.
Why do we need the word به before موسیقی?
The preposition به means "to". Just like in English where we say "listen to music", Farsi requires به to introduce what you are listening to. Because of the compound verb structure, به موسیقی گوش نمیدهم literally translates as "to music ear I do not give".
Why is در شرکت placed before the music part?
Farsi generally follows a Subject-Object-Verb word order. Expressions of place like در شرکت (at the company) usually come early in the sentence, right after the subject. The natural flow here is Subject () + Place () + Prepositional Object () + Verb ().
