Questions & Answers about من کتاب میخوانم.
Why is the verb at the very end of the sentence?
Farsi uses a Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) word order. The subject من (I) comes first, the object کتاب (book) is in the middle, and the verb میخوانم (read) is at the end. This is the standard structure you will see in most basic Farsi sentences, which is different from the English Subject-Verb-Object order!
The English translation says "I read a book," but where is the word for "a"?
In Farsi, general objects don't always need a word for "a" or "an". Simply saying کتاب (book) in this context implies you are reading "a book" or just reading books in general.
Why does the verb میخوانم start with the prefix می?
The prefix می is used to form the present tense in Farsi. It shows that the action is continuous or habitual. Because of this, میخوانم can translate to either "I read" (habitually) or "I am reading" (right now).
Can I leave out the word من (I) and just say کتاب میخوانم?
Yes, absolutely! The verb میخوانم ends with the suffix ـم, which specifically means "I". Since the verb ending already tells the listener exactly who is doing the action, dropping the subject pronoun من is very common and sounds totally natural.
