Questions & Answers about شما بلیت ندارید.
How exactly is nadârid formed, and why is there no mi- prefix?
To make the verb dâshtan (to have) negative, we just add the prefix na- directly to the present tense form. So, dârid (you have) becomes nadârid (you do not have). Remember that dâshtan is a special verb in Farsi: it does not take the usual mi- prefix in the present tense, whether it is positive or negative.
Why is there no word for 'a' before bilit?
In Farsi, you do not always need a word for 'a' or 'an' when talking generally. Saying bilit nadârid literally means 'you do not have ticket', which naturally translates to 'you do not have a ticket' in English.
Is shomâ used here to speak to one person or multiple people?
It could be either! Shomâ translates to 'you' plural, but Farsi speakers also use it to speak to a single person in a formal or polite way, such as speaking to a customer. The verb ending in nadârid matches this polite or plural pronoun.
Is the word bilit a borrowed word?
Yes, it is related to the French word billet. Farsi borrowed many words from French for modern concepts like travel, cinema, and technology.
