Questions & Answers about شما فرانسویاید.
Why is the ending -id attached to the end of farânsavi?
In Farsi, the verb always has to match the subject. Since the subject here is shomâ (you, plural), we use the matching plural "to be" ending, which is -id. Just like the singular endings you learned earlier, it attaches directly to the end of the adjective.
Why is the ending written as اید (with an alef) instead of just ید?
The word farânsavi ends with a vowel sound (the -i). When attaching an ending to a vowel, Farsi spelling rules require adding an alef (the tall letter ا) before the ending to keep things clear. Without it, the word would look like it has two ی letters squished together!
The translation says "You all are French." Could this sentence also be used for just one person?
Yes! While shomâ technically means "you all" (plural), it is also the standard polite word for "you" when talking to a single person. You would use this exact same sentence to politely tell one person "You are French."
How do we get farânsavi (French) from the country name?
The Farsi name for France is Farânseh. To turn a country name ending in that short "-eh" sound into a nationality, Farsi usually replaces the end with -vi. This creates farânsavi, which can mean a French person, the French language, or anything related to France.
