Questions & Answers about او دکتر است.
How do we know او means "she" and not "he"?
Farsi pronouns do not have gender! The word او can mean either "he" or "she" depending on who you are talking about. If this sentence were all by itself without any context, it could just as easily mean "He is a doctor."
Where is the word for "a" in this sentence?
When you state someone's profession in Farsi, you don't use an extra word for "a" or "an". You simply say the profession directly, which makes the literal translation of this sentence "She doctor is."
Why is است (is) at the very end of the sentence?
Farsi word order is different from English. The main verb is almost always placed at the very end of the sentence. Instead of Subject-Verb-Object like in English, Farsi puts the verb last.
The lesson mentions attached (enclitic) verbs. Why is است written as a separate word here?
For "I am" (-am) and "you are" (-i), the verb "to be" attaches to the end of the previous word. However, for "he/she/it is", the formal written word is است (ast), which stands alone as a separate word rather than attaching.
