Asking for the Time
To ask for the time in Persian, use the phrase ساعت چند (literally "what hour"). Simply add است (is) to form a complete question.
| What time is it now? al'ân sâ'at chand ast? |
You can also use this same structure to ask what time a specific event takes place.
| What time is the new class? kelâs-e jadid sâ'at chand ast? |
Telling the Time
To state the time, say ساعت followed by the number. For half-hours, simply add و نیم (and a half) after the number.
| It is half past eight now. | الان ساعت هشت و نیم است.al'ân sâ'at hasht o nim ast. |
| Our meeting is at half past five. |
AM and PM: Parts of the Day
Persian doesn't use AM or PM. Instead, clarify the time by adding the part of the day right after the number: صبح (morning), ظهر (noon), عصر (afternoon), or شب (night).
| Is tomorrow's meeting at ten in the morning? âyâ jalase-ye fardâ sâ'at dah sobh ast? |
| No, the meeting is at twelve noon. | نه، جلسه ساعت دوازده ظهر است.na, jalase sâ'at davâzdah zohr ast. |
| It is eleven at night right now. | الان ساعت یازده شب است.alân sâ'at yâzdah shab ast. |
Asking "When"
If you want to ask "when" an event is happening in a general sense, use the question word کی.
| When is the French class? kelâs-e farânsavi key ast? |
| The French class is at four in the afternoon. |
| When is your work? kâr-e shomâ key ast? |
| My work is at half past seven in the morning. | کار من ساعت هفت و نیم صبح است.kâr-e man sâ'at-e haft o nim sobh ast. |
