Serving as or tantamount to (be manzele-ye / be masâbe-ye)

Formal Equivalency: "Serving As"

In academic, official, or formal Farsi, when you want to express that one concept "serves as," "acts as," or is "tantamount to" another, you can use specialized phrases instead of a simple "is" (است).

These expressions elevate the register of your sentence and are highly common in fields like economics, technology, and journalism.

Using به منزله‌ی

The phrase به منزله implies that one thing holds the rank, status, or equivalent value of another. Because it connects directly to a noun, it always takes the ezafe connector (written here with ی since the word ends in a vowel).

Using به مثابه‌ی

An interchangeable and equally formal alternative is به مثابه. Like the previous expression, it takes the ezafe before the noun it introduces.

You will often see these formal structures paired with descriptive adjectives and complex noun phrases when discussing modern systems, such as decentralized banking or digital transactions.

Remember that regardless of how long the equivalent noun phrase is, the sentence still requires a standard verb (like است or هستند) at the very end to complete the thought.
