When sharing facts, investigating rumors, or debating an issue, you need to state what you are talking about. Farsi has three very common compound prepositions that mean "about," "regarding," or "concerning." They are largely interchangeable in conversation.
One of the most frequent ways to say "about" is در مورد. It connects directly to the following noun using the Ezafe.
| We are discussing this topic. |
| What do you know about that rumor? dar mored-e ân shâye'e che midâni? |
| I want to know more about politics. |
درباره
Another everyday alternative is درباره. Because it ends in a silent he (ه), it uses the ی form of the Ezafe connector, written as دربارهی when linking to a topic.
| They never discuss politics. |
| You must write an article about science. |
| We do not know the truth about this rumor. | ما دربارهی این شایعه حقیقت را نمیدانیم.mâ darbâre-ye in shâye'e haghighat râ nemidânim. |
The third common option is راجع به. Unlike the previous two, which connect to the topic via the Ezafe, this phrase inherently uses the preposition به to link to the subject matter.
| Nobody knows the truth about this topic. | هیچکس راجع به این موضوع حقیقت را نمیداند.hich-kas râje' be in mowzu' haghighat râ nemidânad. |
| Do not talk about that rumor! | راجع به آن شایعه صحبت نکن!râje' be ân shâye'e sohbat nakon! |
| She knows a lot about science. |
