### Past Capability Structure

In Farsi, expressing past capability requires a two-verb structure, very similar to how you express present capability:
- The auxiliary verb **توانستن** (to be able to) in the **Past Continuous** tense.
- The main verb in the **Present Subjunctive** (typically starting with the prefix **ب**).

To form the past continuous of the auxiliary, add the prefix **می** to the past stem **توانست**, followed by the standard personal endings.

Notice the strict sequence in the sentence above:
- Auxiliary: **می‌توانستیم** (we could / we were able to)
- Main verb: **پناه بگیریم** (take shelter - present subjunctive)

### Negation and Questions

To say "could not," simply add the negative prefix **ن** to the front of the auxiliary verb, forming **نمی‌توانست**. The main verb remains in the affirmative subjunctive.
