Passive compound verbs (dâde shodan)

In Farsi, creating the passive form of a compound verb ending in دادن (to give) is highly systematic: simply replace the active infinitive دادن with داده شدن.

This structure is very common in formal news, official reports, and public announcements where the focus is on the action rather than who performed it.

Forming the Passive in Context

In a sentence, the non-verbal part of the compound and the past participle داده remain fixed. Only the auxiliary verb شدن is conjugated to match the tense and subject.

For example, in the simple past tense, شدن conjugates as شد (it was) or شدند (they were).

Passive in Other Tenses

You can easily shift these passive verbs into other tenses or moods just by changing the conjugation of شدن.

Notice how the present indicative می‌شود is used for ongoing or immediate future actions, while the subjunctive شود is triggered by conditionals like "if" (اگر).
