Intensifying Comparatives
You already know how to form comparative adjectives in Farsi by adding the suffix تر (e.g., پیشرفته becomes پیشرفتهتر).
To intensify a comparison—expressing that something is "by far," "much," or "considerably" more—place the phrase به مراتب directly before the comparative adjective.
| by far / considerably | به مراتبbe marâteb |
| It is said that this technology is by far more advanced. | گفته میشود که این فناوری به مراتب پیشرفتهتر است.gofte mishavad ke in fannâvari be marâteb pishrafte-tar ast. |
| Producing this technology is by far more difficult, isn't it? | تولید این فناوری به مراتب دشوارتر است، مگر نه؟towlid-e in fanâvari be marâteb doshvârtar ast, magar na? |
Making Stark Comparisons
Use this structure to emphasize a significant difference. The second item in the comparison can be explicitly named (using از) or implied by context.
| This populous city is by far vaster than the capital. | این شهر پرجمعیت به مراتب وسیعتر از پایتخت است.in shahr-e por-jam'iyat be marâteb vasi'-tar az pâytakht ast. |
| In this populous country, the housing increase is by far more impressive. | در این کشور پرجمعیت، افزایش مسکن به مراتب چشمگیرتر است.dar in keshvar-e por-jam'iyyat, afzâyesh-e maskan be marâteb cheshmgirtar ast. |
Working With "Less" and "Better"
The pattern works exactly the same for irregular comparisons or "lesser" degrees, like کمتر (less) or بهتر (better).
| Whatever they say, our wage is by far lower. | هر چه که آنها بگویند، دستمزد ما به مراتب کمتر است.har che ke ânhâ beguyand, dastmozd mâ be marâteb kamtar ast. |
| I saw him yesterday; his performance is by far better. | دیروز دیدمش؛ عملکرد او به مراتب بهتر است.dirooz didamash; amalkard oo be marâteb behtar ast. |
